Pepsi has announced it is partnering with both TikTok and MTV to produce a new music competition, titled “Becoming a Popstar“, that will premiere the last week in March, with 5 episodes planned.
The format of the show will highlight eight musical artists discovered from TikTok, competing in a series of contests, including creating original songs and music videos that will first air on TikTok.
The contest not only leans heavily into trends that first emerged on the platform, such as a “Duets” competition, but also in engaging a younger generations through nontraditional means, being aired exclusively on TikTok instead of TV.
The show also encourages fan engagement through the app, with users being able to vote their favorite each week. The winner will receive the grand prize of appearing in a Pepsi commercial during the Video Music Awards on June 5th and Pepsi will provide a prize to each weekly winner.
